The Struggle
Y’all, my daddy used to say, “I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired.” And we’d bust out laughing every time because he’d drag it out with that long, dramatic face like he was auditioning for some kinda crazy something another. Now here I am, years later, legit sick and tired of being really sick and tired. No punchline this time folks! My crushed leg injury’s got me on a daily hospital visit with, IV antibiotics, pain, and non stop setbacks. Every step forward feels like three steps back. It’s been brutal.
A Glimmer of Joy
So when we got an email from the USO saying we’d won donated tickets to a Bears game? Y’all we were E.C.S.T.A.T.I.C! Finally, something to look forward to. I’ve always been a die-hard college football UGA girl, never had a thing for the NFL….until that day. I threw on the Bears colors, and yes, a big ol’ blue and orange bow in my hair. Y’all know I love my bows. We parked in a handicapped spot, And looked out at the mountain of stairs and walking paths, and I knew, my leg wasn’t gonna make it. We talked to the staff, explained my situation, and wouldn’t you know it? They went above and beyond, making me feel like I’d stepped into a fairy tale! It was as if they’d rolled out the red carpet just for me. From having a wheelchair ready to seamlessly swapped our seats for ADA accessible ones, their thoughtfulness brought so many tears to my eyes. I was so touched! Can you believe this massive organization showed such incredible care and kindness to a small town girl like me?
A Memorable Night
Jeff and Griffin, those angels, showered us with kindness, smiles, and joy. Soldier Field became our new happy place. My husband and I interlocked hands and got us the biggest hot dog I’ve ever seen!!! Even bigger than Costco’s, and y’all know those dogs are massive. It was the sweetest date night before he shipped out to sea. We were glowing. From that moment on, we were Bears fans for life! 💔 We had to leave at halftime, my pain came roaring back. But that little slice of joy? It meant absolutely everything to us. We even started dreaming about season tickets.
Lasting Gratitude
The next day, still floating on cloud nine, we wrote to the staff and donors to say thank you. And guess what? They asked for our address. Then boom a huge gift basket arrived the night before my husband left for sea! Our last nights together are usually hard and lots of tears are shed even though tears were shed it was a lot more happy and thankful for the Bears saved the day again! Full of fun and so full of so much love. It was the biggest blessing of all. I’m endlessly grateful and will never ever find the words to fully capture what their kindness meant to me, especially amidst everything I’ve been through. After the car crushed my leg, I was certain there was no way I could attend. I was stunned when they made it happen. If not for their efforts, we would’ve missed the game entirely!! We were already preparing to turn back. They completely transformed the impossible into reality, and that memory is the most beautiful memory I’ll cherish forever.So here we are, forever grateful.
